Day 28: Nani Teri Morni Ko

One of the sweetest songs of my childhood, something my nani taught me! 🙂 She still sings this one to me. Thinking of my grandparents today, here you go, this song sung by singer Hemant Kumar’s daughter Ranu has been recreated so many times that I’ve lost count now.

The best part about the song is no doubt the little girl who prances and swirls in the house in her cute skirt. However, the singer is clearly closer to the actor’s age and the difference in the voice is so prominent when you compare it to the other “child” singers of the era, who were more or less adults. Even if you shut your eyes, you can picturise a little girl singing this song with deep breaths in the middle to begin a new sentence and then suddenly losing the beat! 🙂

About the same time, Gharana had a similar song Dadiamma Dadiamma Maan Jao sung by Asha Bhosale and Kamal Barot. I wouldn’t be surprised if both the kids in the song are actually girls playing boys. Anyone know who they are? Also, Lalita Pawar is very entertaining as the Dadiamma. I remember watching this movie when I was a kid, and Pawar has since been the evil mother-in-law for me! 🙂

Day 21: Aaj Kal Tere Mere Pyar Ke

Please Note: Thanks to impending exams and end of my academic year, the posts till 10th May will be a bare minimum. Details of the song, a small intro and the video is all I can manage. Please bear with me, I will update them after the 10th as and when I get the time!

How much does Mumtaz shake her head you ask?! Too much! It pains me to watch her move her body so much constantly throughout the head, and then I think of the multiple takes she must have given for each step! Uff!

This song, like Likhe Jo Khat Tujhe which had another Kapoor, relies a lot on expressions of the protagonists. So much so, that I would not believe it if you didn’t find their smiles, Pran’s eyebrow lift and Shammi Kapoor’s comical expressions endearing!

This is a song that practically everyone knows, it’s also one that people dance on at parties, enjoy it today and marvel at how couples could take the center-stage and dance in front of guests who look mildly amused!

My favourite lines are:

Day 11: Ajeeb Dastan Hain Ye

If a song survives the onslaught of more than 50 years of music and remains popular with people whose parents weren’t in born when the song released, then there has to be something really special about it!

Ajeeb Dastan Hain Ye  is certainly one of those songs. I think part popularity of the song is also owed to a lot of daily soaps on Indian TV that often use this song for any and every love-triangle. Honestly, look at the video and you realise that this is clearly how it usually is. A couple meant to be together but usually isn’t because of the “other woman” who actually is the wife. Cut to this song.

Meena Kumari is the one singing this song in the movie voiced by Lata Mangeshkar (who sounds like a different person) while Nadira and Raaj Kumar look on. I presume it’s their wedding or a wedding  party because I have not seen the movie, but I cannot understand for the life of me, why would anyone sing such a sad song to a wedding and be allowed to do so! People are swaying and appreciating her very apparent sad mourning of love. Weird.

One of the other reasons this song has remained evergreen is also the lyrics, I think. Shailendra Kesarilal, the lyricist must be applauded because he succeeded in finding the right combination of contempt, longing and love in his lyrics that people connect with even today. However, the most popular lines are also my favourite ones:

Mubarakein tumhein ke tum…
kisi ke noor ho gaye,
kisike itne paas ho,
ki sabse door ho gaye.

(Congratulations to you,
that you’re someone’s light now,
So close to someone now,
that you’re away from everyone else.)

There are two videos I offer today, the first is Lata Mangeshkar live in concert with a (pointless) introduction by Jaya Bachchan and the second is the original from the movie. Notice the change in the voice of the singer and the fact that it sounds beautiful either way.

On a side note, the chorus ladies in their colourful saris from the first video make an entertaining sight! 🙂

Day 7: Likhe Jo Khat Tujhe

I’ve not seen this video, let alone the movie (the summary seems good). But this is one of those songs that I heard as a kid mostly while playing Antakshri with people older than myself and in a Bollywood night concert etc.

The music and the lyrics may be great, my first draw to this song is the way Mohammad Rafi sings, but what does it for me with this song is the expressions! Watch the video and I hope you notice the absolute lack of dance choreography that is synonymous with Bollywood.

Though Shashi Kapoor is a little comical sometimes with his expressions, Asha Parekh is SO expressive that I wonder how she moves all those facial muscles! The picturesque background (I guess it is Kashmir), is something I noticed much later. Try to look at the snow capped mountains if you can take your eyes of the duo.

The lyrics of the antara in itself are pretty predictable for me. But the mukhda with the khat (letter) brings up a sort of nostalgia in me for the “good old days of Bollywood”. I am absolutely mermerised on how there is barely anything happening in the song, they walk, he sings, they go to a car, he sings, they go around a tree, he sings and done!

I guess that’s the charm of the actors of yesteryear’s that everyone keeps talking of. Hope many more make their way into this list!

My favourite lines are the ones in the opening:

Likhe jo khat tujhe, wo teri yaad mein,
Hazaaron rang ke, nazaarein ban gaye.

(The letters I wrote to you while reminiscing about you,
Have turned into scenes of a thousands of colours)

On the request of a friend who follows my blog but wrote to me to say doesn’t understand Hindi, I will be translating my favourite lines everyday from now  on, I don’t guarantee that it is the best translation though. 🙂
