Day 2: Maine Paidal Se Jaa Raha Tha

Movie: Hero No.1 (1997)
Song: Maine Paidal Se Jaa Raha Tha
Music Director: Anand-Milind
Singers: Vinod Rathod and Poornima (Sushma Shreshtha)
Actors (in the song): Govinda and Karishma Kapoor

There was this entire phase of movies in Bollywood when Hyderabadi humour and Hindi dominated the no-brain cinema genre. I specifically remember Govinda and Kader Khan in them! Hero No. 1 was in those sequence of movies and also that had the so-and-so No.1 phase.

The music of these movies are at best cheesy and at worst absolutely forgettable. What makes them special is the sheer energy that Govinda put into the dance(plus it looks so effortless)! This song has Karishma Kapoor starring opposite him who I think is one of his only co-stars(after Raveena Tandon) who managed to match him in hilarity and energy.

This song is one of my all time favourites because of it’s lyrics! As a kid, I never got the obvious innuendo of the choreography and the lyrics, but now I do, and I still wonder if it is half as bad as what we have now.

My favourite part is the singer Poornima who does an ad lib in the middle and the end that’s so funny not only because of the Hyderabadi Hindi but also the way she says it (waayy more energetic when compared to Vinod Rathod.)

However if you’re looking for a gem in this mine, it is this:

Maine shopping ko jaa rahi tha,
une saira se aa raha thee,
mere haatha ko jo pakda,
mujhe badnaam kiya na!

On second thoughts, it is the dialect that makes it so endearing to me, how about you!?

BONUS: Though the quality of video isn’t great, look at the people watching the shooting of this song! Hahahaha! We really love to watch people dance on streets. 😛
